Leadership Reflection – Pre-interview

Throughout my life I have been surrounded by so many people who possess different leadership qualities. For this interview however, I decided on a gentleman who was my mentor, role model, and friend when I decided to challenge myself and take on a leadership role while serving the city as an EMT. There are many reasons as to why I decided to interview him and I am proud to say I learned a lot from him when trying to tackle a male dominated profession like that of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Day in and day out he consistently communicates with crew members as well as the dispatching center, he is trustworthy and reliable, he knows how to delegate tasks and manage his time effectively, and always remains level-headed during high-stress calls. Moreover, he advocates for his crew members and stands up for what is right. While working alongside him, he was always patient with me, lent out a helping hand whenever needed, and provided a safe space for me to ask questions regarding my role as an associate supervisor. Aside from his normal duties as a supervisor, he tackles extra projects to ensure enough resources are available for vulnerable populations in the city.

At the EMS company, he has the formal position of Operations Supervisor, someone who manages staffing of units, completes administrative work and incident reports, ensures the safety of crew members and patients, all while being on-call ready for any emergencies that may arise. The main difference between a formal and informal leadership position is that one carries an official title (formal leader) however they both influence a population.

With someone who has been in a leadership role for many years, I am excited to learn the different challenges he faces especially now during the pandemic, how he is able to be so confident and calm during times of emergency, and how he is able to manage so many different tasks while still producing quality work and being so accessible to everyone. I am also curious to find out when he knew he wanted to become a leader in EMS and what exactly inspired him to take on that role.

  1. Beautiful site and I enjoyed the picture of what I assume is your ‘home away from home’. Grades and comments are in Brightspace.
